Cleaning a Sub-Zero Exterior: Stainless Steel, Carbon Finishes and Custom Panels

Fingerprints on a Sub-Zero door may look like a simple cleaning job, but the finish determines which method is appropriate. Standard stainless steel, a carbon-colored finish and a custom cabinet panel can look similar in a photograph while requiring different care. Identify the surface before selecting a product.

A useful cleaning routine preserves the existing finish. It should not turn into an attempt to sand out scratches, polish away an unknown coating or cover up damage with progressively stronger chemicals.

Check the appliance paperwork, panel order or cabinetmaker's information. A panel-ready appliance may have a wood, painted or other decorative front selected independently of the refrigerator. The cleaning instructions for stainless steel do not establish what is safe on that panel, its edge banding or its handle coating.

If you are unsure, photograph the front and any product labels, then ask the installer or panel supplier to identify the finish. Avoid experimenting on the most visible part of the door. Even a cleaner intended for appliances should be checked against the specific material and the cleaner's own label.

Sub-Zero's stainless-steel and platinum guidance recommends a lint-free or microfiber cloth, an appropriate stainless cleaner and polishing in the direction of the grain. Follow the product instructions and keep cleaner application controlled. The manufacturer warns against bleach on stainless exteriors because it can damage the finish.

Prepare separate clean cloths for cleaning and finishing. Work over a manageable area and inspect it from different angles after it is dry. This helps distinguish a missed fingerprint or remaining film from a scratch. If the surface is already clean, adding another layer of polish may make it harder to see what is actually present.

For carbon stainless, Sub-Zero specifies mild detergent and water with a lint-free or microfiber cloth, followed by rinsing and drying. It warns against metallic or abrasive cleaning materials and against bleach or ammonia, which are not interchangeable with the recommendations for standard stainless. Use the manufacturer's carbon-finish cleaning instructions.

This is why a general recommendation from another appliance in the kitchen may be a poor match. Keep the finish-specific instructions with your appliance record, especially if a housekeeper or another family member handles routine cleaning.

A bottle used on the door front should not automatically be used on shelves, plastic liners or gaskets. Treat the two jobs separately: different cloths, clearly identified products and the appropriate instructions for each surface. Our Sub-Zero interior-cleaning guide covers that process.

For a custom cabinet front, ask the panel maker about the finish, cleaning products and any limitations around edges or joints. The refrigerator model alone cannot tell you how a third-party decorative surface was finished. Keep that information available for future touch-ups or replacement hardware.

If you notice scratching, peeling, pitting or discoloration, take photographs in normal and angled light. Note when it appeared, what cleaner was used and whether the surface had adhesive or protective film on it. Do not assume a mark can be removed without altering the surrounding finish.
