Sub-Zero Undercounter Ice Makers: Why Melting Ice Can Be Normal
A stand-alone Sub-Zero ice maker under a counter should not be judged like an ice bin inside a freezer. The UC-15I and 315I make and store ice differently, and some melting in the bin does not automatically mean the machine has lost refrigeration. Start by reading the model label so the advice matches the appliance.

The storage bin is not a freezer compartment
Sub-Zero explains in its UC-15I troubleshooting guide that the ice bin is not refrigerated. A warm room or direct sunlight can make stored ice melt faster. The manufacturer's 315I guidance makes the same distinction.
Consider what happens over a normal period of use: is new ice being produced, is the bin replenishing, and is water draining? A few melting cubes and a machine that never produces a batch are different complaints. Write them separately rather than calling both “the ice maker is warm.”
Distinguish ordinary melting from a drainage problem
Standing water, overflow or water reaching the floor needs attention. The model-specific troubleshooting guidance includes checking for drainage restrictions, but a built-in machine should not be pulled out casually to inspect a concealed hose. Record where water appears and whether it coincides with production, cleaning or a recent installation change.
A photograph showing the whole bin is often more useful than a close-up of one wet cube. Include any control indicator and note whether the water clears or remains. For an active leak, protect the surrounding area and arrange assistance; keep water away from electrical connections.
Evaluate production with the operating conditions
Before requesting service, note whether the machine is on, whether a delay function or reminder is displayed and whether the water supply was recently changed. Include recent plumbing, filter or reverse-osmosis work in the history. Do not guess a pressure adjustment or turn internal controls without the correct procedure.
Track one consistent observation period rather than opening the bin repeatedly and estimating production from memory. Record when ice was removed for use. A bin emptied during a party tells a different story from a bin that remains empty during a quiet day.
Cleaning products are model-specific
Sub-Zero's cleaner and sanitizer guidance states that products used for DEU1550I and UC-15I models are not interchangeable with 315I cleaners. Identify the appliance before buying a bottle. The right product for one Sub-Zero ice machine can be the wrong product for another.
For UC-15I, the manufacturer's cleaning instructions call for cleaning and sanitizing water-contact surfaces every six months and explain that a started cleaning cycle must finish to clear the chemicals. Set aside the required time and follow the entire model-specific procedure. Do not substitute a household cleaner or stop midway because the machine appears clean.
Make the service request specific
- Identify the exact model, including any suffix.
- Describe production, melting and drainage separately.
- Photograph warning lights, the bin and any leak location.
- Record the last cleaning, filter change and plumbing work.
